There are 53 people living and working aboard the RRS James Cook for our expedition (21 expedition scientists, 10 expedition engineers, and 22 ship's personnel), and our project also involves several colleagues ashore.

For this expedition, we have the engineering team aboard who operate the UK's deep-diving remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Isis, and technicians from UK National Marine Facilities who support the other equipment that we are using.

Ship's personnel

Colleagues ashore

Our expedition involves several colleagues ashore including: geochemist Dr Doug Connelly at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, who is one of the principal investigators of our research project; marine biologist Dr Sven Thatje at the University of Southampton; and international colleagues including Prof Cindy Van Dover at Duke University, Prof Chris German at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Prof Koichi Nakamura at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Tsukuba, Japan, and Prof Ken Takai at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science & Technology.
