We arrived at South Georgia and spent much of today in transit along the southeast side of the island, whose snowy peaks poked through the cloud on our starboard side. In the evening, we reached our target area, where our previous expeditions detected methane in the water above the seabed. Our task is to see whether that methane is generally diffusing from a wide area of seabed, or whether there are any places where it is bubbling out of the seabed.
Last of the megacores
To find out, we're lowering the megacorer to collect samples of seafloor sediment, and overnight we'll be running survey lines with an echosounder to see if we can find any plumes of bubbles.
