Wednesday 26th January

We've spent the day running another survey line with the CTD probe, to check that the site we found on the SHRIMP dive is the source of the signals that we saw earlier. Sure enough, as we towed the CTD probe up the slopes of Hook Ridge, we found the strongest signals over the site that we saw on the dive, then fading away as we dropped down the other side of the ridge.

While we've been working over the past couple of days, we've had some locals pay us a visit - chinstrap penguins, and humpback whales, who have been playing around the ship. Leighton Rolley has been photographing them, and you can see all the pictures here on his rrs.jamescook.com blog.

After our CTD survey line, we collected water samples just above the site for the geochemists and microbiologists, before deploying the megacorer on a target that we'd reconnoitred with SHRIMP. The megacorer behaved impeccably, keeping the night watch very busy - and happy - with samples to process.
