Sunday 30th January

As our watches cycle through another day, we've been running more survey lines with the CTD probe, hunting for vent plumes above the Three Sisters volcanic outcrop. Signals so far have not been as definitive as those at Hook Ridge, and it may be that this area is less active.

Watching the traces on the CTD monitor displays can be very repetitive. So to help pass the time, knitting seems to be a new craze sweeping the ship. Several members of the team bought wool in Chile, and have been teaching others how to knit, pearl and drop.

Dinner today also deserves a special mention. The team in the galley, led by chefs Darren and Dean, work around the clock to produce a varied and tasty menu to look after us all, using the contents of the cavernous ship's stores.

This evening, as a starter we enjoyed trout and cream cheese pastry parcels with a lime beurre blanc, followed by grilled steak with brandy cream sauce, and for dessert we were treated to "Rachel's Perfect Pumpkin Pie", after geochemist Rachel joined the galley team for an afternoon. Rachel has written more about her secondment to the galley here.

As dusk fell, we sent SHRIMP down to begin a dive inspecting the seafloor at the middle ridge of the Three Sisters. This dive should run through tomorrow, weather permitting.
